'AUM Bhadram Karnebhih' The Upanishad begins with AUM What does AUM mean? The substratum of Rajas, Tamas and Sat gunas That Eternal Authority, we call as AUM. See, Neither they said, truth, nor conscious, nor bliss, nor omnipresent. This is the expansion of AUM. Pranav AUM Pranav means that indestructible Brahma- It's a medium to express that entirety in one Word. When AUM is said, then, all the four Vedas came in it. 18 Puranas came in this. Shrutis are included in this- Just in this AUM. The rishi says, Bhadram... Karnebhih Karna -Ears Your ears always... what should they do? See, the word is Bhadra. That... who is a person with good conduct. is religious, is pious, We call him a Bhadra Purush- A righteous man. The antonym of bhadra is 'a-bhadra'. -Immoral, unethical unintelligent- Abhadra. Bhadra means one who is intelligent, ethical, moral, religious, kind, courteous. A beautiful person...! Bhadram In earlier times, when someone met such a great individual, then he introduced him as-"He is a Bhadra Purush!" hmm... If someone must be given great respect, "He's a" Bhadra Purush. And the one who doesn't have all these good qualities, then, He wouldn't even be called a jerk for the sake of introduced. Bhadra Eminent From your ears, this is a prayer, and I understand that, In the world, there can be no better prayer than this, though it's Mangalacharan. But, its a prayer. But it can't be any more beautiful than this... The teacher is saying that Oh Lord! I, with my these ears, 'Shrinuyama Devaah' Oh Devas! May I always listen to that which is noble with these ears, -Bhadram Not Abhadra- Not boorish. Not of the things based in ignorance. May I hear things based on true wisdom. May I listen to what is absolute- the best. May I not listen to ignoble things. From these Karnas- From these ears, May I never listen to someone's slander, Nor do I listen to someone's false praises nor, into sensual modifications, that thing, Umm, is such, listening to which, lust arises in the mind, May I never listen to such a thing with these ears. See, the impact of the word goes very deep. The human's mind.. gets influenced so easily If something utterly gruesome hoarse, cruel, in loud voice, if someone speaks into your ear, and around you, some devastating loud noise happens, Then, you won't have to think, The entire body would go into a shock Through a reflex action in your ears, if someone's moaning sound gets heard, then, Then, spontaneously a sadness would seep into the mind, "Who's crying and why?" "Well, find out! Well, ask!" If someone's loud laughter's noise comes into your ears, even if you don't know why someone is laughing, With its influence, you'll also laugh. and while laughing, you'll ask "Well, dear, why are you laughing? Say it na!" You don't know what is it all about But, with the effect of the sound, the way of our mind changes. Draupadi didn't say something special or said much. But Draupadi had made Duryodhana.... That one which they made- Indra's illusionary palace Where it is wet, it looks dry. That which is dry, it appears watery So, on dry place when, Duryodhana lifted up his dhoti up to his knees so that my dhoti doesn't gets wet While it was dry earth. Then, the Draupadi laughed out loud! And there her laughter was so much ridiculing It was full of such poison that Duryodhana's mind-prana were set on fire. And on top of that, Draupadi's this saying, -The blind man's son is blind. It was enough her laughter evoked such hatred and angst in Duryodhana's mind, Be very cautious. And look into your life very carefully. in your life also, many times such occasions have come, when others' laughter has also pricked. And at times, someone's greeting with a Namaste also pricks. You say, "See how he said it to me!" They wonder, "It was just a Namaste!" "No, see the way he said, did you hear it?" "Did you notice the tone?!" Why does it pierces? Listening from our ears, The attraction for things the enticements of the world, their desires arose in our subconscious. You heard- He has a toy Teleport yourself back to childhood A doll was there that when laid down closed its eyes and it opened them when made to stand tiny cars were there- in red-yellow colors seeing those miniature cars, listening to the car's noise, boys got enticed- I need to get this one anyhow. in someone's pocket, glass marbles, springing and striking of them with each other made a sound and hearing to that, some boy's mind wanted that -The same marbles I need as well! And heard that someone has a kite, then hearing it...-I also want! So, in your mind, didn't the desires arise due to hearing? He has a cycle, then i need as well! He has a scooter, then I need it, too! He has a car, I need as well! He has a girlfriend, I also want one! She has a boyfriend. I also need one. Her clothes are very fine- Your ears heard this. & the mind created a desire. Can you tell to me one such desire that you didn't hear from anywhere and came into you by itself? Is there any such desire? Say it! You heard he went to America- and is having a great time! Your mind also thought- We'll go too! You heard there is a club, restaurant there, there's a sport bar there, a discotheque there, There happens a party. There's a farmhouse, swimming pool. You heard it. Your ears heard & the mind created a desire. Is there any such desire... If you can remember.... See, Upanishad is not a Vidya of believing. Upanishad is a science to know. So, you don't listen in a way, that it's not for us. It's a great thing. You listen in such a way, that... whether all these things are happening in your life or not? It's a science. It's pure science of observation. This is a Rishi's observation. What I'm saying. Now, you've to bring it into your observation- whether it's true or not? You heard- he got married. "May I also be!" You heard In 2 years, he had a kid. So- "May I also have!" You heard, they went on a cruise. "We'll also go!" You heard they went by plane, with the entire clan, to do destination marriage. "We'll also do it!" You heard, over there so and so was very pricey, thing were there... "I'll also buy!" So, we can say From the ears, the world's desires have crept in. Right? or didn't they? & now, you're listening to words of true wisdom through these very ears. ignorance has come through the listening of the ears, So, also, it will go through....? (Listening only) Are you getting it? From the door you enter inside, from the same door, you go outside. Listening to the world's talk from the ears, the mind the desire and lust came in. Now, listening to true wisdom, we'll take it in reverse order, now. So, listen very attentively. If listened absolutely, then, it will also clear ignorance and transform your mind as well. That's why, leaving laziness, attachment and slumber, being concentrated in the subconscious, If possible, then all the while keep your spine erect, tied up in asana, listen to it. Because this is that science, which can break down your shackles of lifetimes. It's the science of the Rishis. This is that weapon of the great souls, using which they cut down and threw away their own ignorance. It's the same Brahmastra (the ultimate weapon driven by the force of Brahma) which is available to you today. Lying in mother's womb, Abhimanyu, couldn't listen that how to pierce the chakras to come out as the mother had slept. The solution told by father Arjuna, he couldn't listen. So, he knew how to go inside, into a Chakarvyuh, But not coming out of it. As the mother fell asleep. So, you don't end up becoming such an Abhimanyu. that you listened to half of the thing, and the rest you didn't listen at all. Listen to the whole thing. An incomplete thing becomes dangerous. The whole thing is very meaningful. The Rishi says, "Bhadram Karnebhiḥ Srinuyaam Devah" -Oh divine, I pray that my ears, always... may listen to what is decent. May they listen to the divine wisdom. Now, a small query comes here, That whom are they addressing as 'Devah'? So, here 'Devah, is not some sky-roaming entity- the problem is you people nowadays, watch these TV serials a lot So, in the serial, they show the gods and goddesses, like...? Some people then argue, "Nothing is up there!" They're making a fool. Then, they say, "No, they exist as it's written in our scriptures." The arguers also don't know and the defenders don't know as well, that whom they're talking about? To whom are they addressing- Devah? The power with which ears listen, that becomes the god of the ears. So, devta means...? That power with which your auditory nerves function. Let me say... umm... At times, after age of say 70 plus So, elderly's hearing gets compromised So, the doctor checks They say, "Sir, nothing's wrong with your ears, only the nerves, they have shrunken." one elderly gentleman said to me that doctor says nerves have 'dried' up. I said, "Then, water them!" Water them, maybe they get well again! No it's not like that. He said, "You're joking!" At times, due to certain unknown reason, at any age, The system of hearing, if some issue occurs in that, some leakage occurs in the auditory canal, ummm... Some issue occurs in the eardrum These... 3 bones which are there in the ear with which All this functioning happens, Amongst these 3, even if one doesn't work right, then the listening stops Okay, at times, The ear is good, But, the nerve that goes from the ear to the brain, that nerve gets an issue. or some issue occurred in that part of the brain. then the hearing ceases. if any ENT specialist is sitting here, then I'd surely like to know, what would you do in such cases? In some cases, it was found that umm... like... the child was born deaf, he couldn't hear. So, that child's operation happens before he turns four So, here they fix a transmitter. Internally, they connect it then His voice therapy is done. So, gradually the child listens to words one by one, then gradually, his language... is developed. then he's able to speak a little Now, the power with which, the brain, auditory canal, auditory nerves, eardrum, all these were working, what was the power which made them work? That's what a Sage calls Devta.
