One of his (Guru Tegh Bahadur's) disciples was Bhai Sati Das. The body of Sati Das ji was wrapped in cotton and he was set on fire. Can you imagine? And Guru is made to witness all this!. But the Guru did not give in. Then, his second disciple, Bhai Mati Das was tied to a wheel which had knives attached to it. There were two wheels- he was tied to one wheel, then these two wheels were rotated, and between these two wheels which were full of knives, his body (was cut) like this Look at the kinds of torture instruments they (Mughals) had made. Like this, two wheels with knives attached to them- he was tied to one and then it was rotated like this. All this was shown to the Guru- "Look!" "Accept Islam", but he said 'No'. Then in Chandni Chowk, he was made to sit in the center, like a...common criminal All the people- the people of Delhi were called to the Durbar, it was an order- the order of the Durbar was that all had to reach there And in front of the masses he was beheaded. The tyrants also called out, "Come on, who is his disciple? Who will come to collect his body?" It is said that trembling in fear, no one dared to come forward. The Guru's disciple, loves his own life and so did not come forward. And.... Hai Hai Hai Sab Jagat Kare, Jai Jai Jai Sur Lok- watching this savagery, everybody were lamenting Whereas, the Devtas- the Demi Gods It has been written in his praise, that the Devtas were celebrating," Welcome, Maharaj, you are coming to our realm. You will come to Devloka (Heaven), why stay in this Manushya Lok (Human world)?" A storm arose. Taking advantage of this storm, one disciple carried away the Guru's head, one disciple carried away his torso. Today, in Delhi, where Gurudwara Rakab Ganj stands, there the Guru's beheaded corpse was cremated. And his head, holding it close to the chest... it's so difficult to speak... Walking for six days, when they reached Anandpur Sahib... six days later, his head... was cremated wah..wah..wah...... Then later, Sri Guru Gobind Rai once declared on the day of Baisakhi, "From today, I am changing history, I will turn birds into lions". And on that day... after Amrit Paan (ceremony of initiation) they were converted into Singh they were already Sikhs, but now he made them 'Singh' 'Singh' meaning one who is now trained in weaponry, one who is trained in bow-arrow, sword, spear warfare The Guru said," Enough sacrifices have been made, we will give no more! Now if anyone forces us to convert to Islam, we will chop their heads off." Guru Gobind Singh ji fought fourteen wars...fourteen wars In one war, two of his eldest sons...... were martyred. These were just a handful, those (Mughals) were in lakhs. The fortress was surrounded, but this father prepared and sent his own sons because, if he told his disciples to go and fight-get killed, what was this? He sent his own son first- 'Go'. What was the age? Eighteen years. The first son went and was martyred...! was killed by arrows, spears, swords cutting through his body. Then the younger son was sent, that now you go and fight, go like a warrior; go like a general Even the second son was also martyred. Then...all his Singh followers pleaded that," Maharaj, you will have to leave this fortress, this place is unsafe, fight at some other opportunity. Now, we are ordering that you have to leave." "Alright, I'm going." (Clap, clap) Clapping he went..said I will not sneak away (Clap, clap) clapping he went. "Leaving...the Guru of the Singh's is leaving", he declared openly. The night was pitch-dark the Sarsa river had yet to be crossed. All were mounted on horses. Two of his younger children, three years and seven years old- two more young sons, were with their grandmother. But in the river and raging floods, nobody knew who went where? They had a cook, Gangu, with them Gangu took them to his village, but in the grandmother's bag, when he saw gold and silver, the mind got filled with the greed .......Hmmm........ And the enemy was searching...! They were searching- Where are the Guru's children? Search! Search for the mother! Search for the Guru! We will kill them all. And Gangu, for a paltry sum of money... revealed their whereabouts. Here today, where we have Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Nawab of Sirhind captured them and put them in jail. They are just kids- of three years- of seven years The same thing once again- Embrace Islam! you're telling a three year old child to convert to Islam? But this lion-son of the Guru said, "No! I will not convert." There has been a great Sikh historian, Bhai Ganda Singh. Sardar Ganda Singh- He has written the children were thrashed- Accept! Accept!...They did not give in. Then, they were again called the next day; then given temptations "we will marry you to princesses; we will give you this and that; Embrace Islam!" They still refused to accept conversion. Then the executioners were called and they were buried alive in a brick wall. Some Sikh historians even say that, it was not like the children were just made to stand inside the walls and they died. They say that, no, they were also beheaded. 'Seesa Diya Par See Na Uchri' this is said for Guru Tegh Bahadur, he had his head chopped off but did not utter a single lament. These news reached Shri Guru Gobind Maharaj that both your sons like this, in the wall.... In this, there are several points- one point says that the first day when the brick wall was half-made, it crumbled they wanted to brick them alive, so the wall fell down they said- never mind, we'll do it again tomorrow. And then.... this happened not only once..... It is history- the quest of many people -based on that, we get these findings. But the essential point is that even after so much had happened Shri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj kept on fighting wars but did not convert to Islam. He said, "I will not be forced into anything." "Chidiyon se baaj ladaunga, tabhi Gobind Singh naam kahaunga." These Sikhs of mine that appear so innocent, they are not innocent I will give them... Amrit (sacred drink); fill them with such valour that they will fight with these hawks, these Mughals will be destroyed totally. A poet...a 19th century poet has written... He was a fakir...! He said..... It would have been there; and would have been here Would have been this; and would have been that too If the sword had not been wielded by Gobind Singh then all round, it would have been Sunnat and only Sunnat (Islamic teachings) If the sword had not been wielded by Gobind Singh then everywhere, it would have been Sunnat, only Sunnat. You may wonder why am I telling you this history? I'm telling you this because Guru Gobind Singh was a man of self-realization, an enlightened being. Since he is an enlightened one so, despite knowing the world to be an illusion, He performs all his duties and responsibilities. Fearless and dauntless, he kept on fighting like a lion. It is this very Guru Gobind Singh's Bani 'Japa Sahib', in which He says, He eulogizes the name of the Lord as 'Formless, Measureless, Boundless... What is the Lord like? Abaadh- meaning, that which cannot be destroyed Agaadh- that which is infinite Apaar- that which is boundless Aseem- that which does not have any limits Ananta- that which is infinite Anaadi- that which will never end Aadi - that which never had a beginning Ajaya- that which cannot be defeated Abhaya- that which does not fear anyone Through the medium of these Vedanta words they describe 'Him' But.... if called Anaami (Nameless)- then how will a new devotee connect his mind to Him? So, the name given by Guru Nanak, 'Ik Omkara' became the basis of Sadhana (daily spiritual practice). Ik Omkara Wahe Guru (Wondrous Lord) became the basis Wahe Guru Now what? The mind is being emptied of words the mind is being emptied of ideas and what is left behind? just one eternal word. and then the mind got Immersed in the same sound; the mind dissolved away. 'Thun Mein Dhyan, Dhyan Mein Manua' Practice the sound; rest the mind in that sound and get immersed in it. What has to be immersed? The mind, not the heart. Look! Medically, when we say heart then that is the one which is pumping here in the chest When we say mind...well..! medical science uptil 1960 was not even ready to agree that there is something called mind they said that we have brain and we have heart, that's it! No mind. Omkara sadhana is to bring the mind into the heart Now heart doesn't mean that physical heart that we have to pull the mind into the heart. Heart is the place.... where.... there is this... energy vortex... In yoga we call it 'anahad chakra'. So bringing the mind into it, meaning- joining the mind with this energy center. But even in non-yogic philosophies they still use the term 'heart' and they say bring your mind into the heart. How? The shloka has already explained us- chanting OM. Okay, there's another little question in this. He says that, we have to focus on the pause between the sounds of successive OM, and together with this, one feels the inhalation-exhalation of breath also. So, how to harmonize the inhalation and exhalation ? And how do we pay attention to the pause in OM? Still haven't been able to understand this, questions Brajesh ji. Brajesh, the deep breath will continue on its own, that will not stop, you are not doing Kumbhaka (retention of breath). Inhalation- exhalation is happening OM goes on in the mind Now... Look! When you say it, then it's easy OM In between two Om, we have become silent. Now when you are silent, the breathing will continue, we are not stopping that. You are breathing deeply, but you quieten, you still the mind. How? Now, if no thoughts come into the mind, then the mind has stilled. And if more thoughts come into the mind, then the mind has not become still. Now see, "OM" the mind thinks- I'm feeling cold, do something, pull up the shawl. Now the thoughts have come, right? It has not got emptied. then the next OM is uttered Avkasha means, empty. Space! Avkasha will become 'Space' in English. In between two OM, there should be space What does space mean? That there should be no thought running in the mind. Obviously, physical sensations are there we cannot stop that, that is going to be there- fine! But mind is not actively thinking about anything, Quiet! OM What to do? When OM is said, full attention should be on OM. But, sometimes people chant Om 'Om,Om,Om'- just going on chanting like that no feeling, no realization, no sensitivity, nothing Now you do it But look, when we chant OM some vibrations are felt in the chest, in the throat, they are felt even in the head. Okay, all will now say OM Now, place your hands on your chest, and now say OM Can you feel something in the chest? Right? Do it again! OM
