Akhanda Mandalakaaram (The undivisible Omnipresent Supreme) Vyaptam Yena Chara Charam (Pervading both the living and non-living manifestations) Tatpadam Darshitam Yena (He who has seen the feet of The Supreme Lord, who has experienced oneness with the ultimate conciousness) To HIm, I offer my Salutations! Eka Yeva Parobandhur (The only friend during difficult times is The Guru) Vishme Samupasthite (He who is present at all times) Guru Sakala Dharmatma (Guru is the soul of all religions) To Him, I offer my Salutations! Om Om Om Shantihi (May you be bestowed with peace of mind and tranquility) May you be bestowed with peace of mind and tranquility May you be bestowed with peace of mind and tranquility As we commence the discussion on Patanjali Yog Sutra Primarily it would be imperative to understand that Patanjal Yog Sutra Understand these three words first Patanjal is not a name of a person it is a Title like Vedvyas (The one who is classified in the Vedas) is not merely a name of a person Vyasa it is a Title alike Priest, Brahmin Those who have studied the Darshan Shastra (philosophy of existence) Those Yog darshan-he philosophy of Yoga Nyaay darshan-philosophy of logic, methodologies Sankhya darshan-dualistic school of philosophy encompassing consciousness and nature Vedant darshan- philosophy of the vedas (philosplophy of liberation and knowledge) Vimamsa darshan-philosophy of investigation, query, pondering Karu vimamsa-philosophy of reflecting on the ritual action Uttar vimamsa-philosphy of the later portions of Vedas-the Upanishads etc, those who have worked upon these six philospphies, these eminent personalities sages, intellectuals have been bestowed with the title of vyaas or sage, or seer or Patanjal traditionally if we take a look at the Yog Sutras-aphorisms on Yoga Practice collected in this book, the aphorisms which we shall delve into now the name of the sage who compiled this book incidentally was Patanjali that's a different story So, Rishi Patanjal compiled the aphorisms of Yog of Samkhya and has given it to us in a form which can be said to be codified so the codifier of yog sutras is called Rishi Patanjali and Patanajali as such is a Title in itself it is a certification of knowledge and scholarship like you would call someone a professor u may call someone Chaturvedi (knower of 4 vedas), Trivedi (knower of 3 vedas), Dwivedi (knower of 2 vedas) someone who has a Ph.D degree is called a doctor someone who has a diploma in literature is called a doctorate anybody who has done D.Lit will be called a Doctor so the philosophy of Nyaya (logic, reasoning) like the six principle/primary philosophies. Philosphers who have discussed these aphorisms explained their meanings provided an exposition evaluated the aphorisms commented on the aphorisms such commentators are called Patanjal It is said that Rishi Patanjal codified and compiled these aphorisms around 2500 years ago and studies based on yoga The understanding and explanation of aphorisms of Yog the preparation and practice it's a collection of it all. Some historians say that the noble soul who compiled the Patanjal Yog Sutra was from Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh. A few historians believe that he was from Tamil Nadu. and some others believe that he was from Sri lanka bear in mind that Sri Lanka used to be a part of the Indian sub-continent like many other countries formed later which formed later. If we have to understand the word 'Yog' What is the meaning of 'Yog'? 'Yog' means 'to connect'. When two things are connected when joining of two things happens, that is Yog Meeting of two things is 'Yog' As regards to Yog translators authors facilitators have said that when prana (life giving force) meets with apaan (outward breath) that is Yog Secondly, when an individual meets with the Omnipresent there is a connection that is called Yog. Thirdly, when the individual implied consciousness unites with the Supreme Consciousness that is Yog. That is, the meeting of the micro consciousness with the macro consciousness, that is Yog. That is, the meeting of the individual prana with the maha prana is Yog. And one facilitator has also said that when our mind connects with the Supreme consciousness 'Brahma' that is Yog. Then many said that when Ujasamadhav, made up of this metal this metal, means when two things meet, it's Yog but Ujasamadhav, when your mind attains Samadhi that is Yog. There can't be Yog without Samadhi. This is Patanjal Yog Sutra, not a jest. This is Patanjal Yog Sutra, not just a talk or story. which you may listen to unconsciously, half asleep, half awake, Not possible. This is Patanjal Yog Sutra It needs Vivek -discretion, Buddhi-intelligence, Tatparta-readiness, Ekagrata-concentration, Tanmayta-attentiveness, a contained mind All the above are needed. If I am being truly honest, this class for Yog begins only for those who have fulfilled the pre-requisites of Yog. and What is the role of Yog? or What is the form of Ashtang yog (8 limbed path towards achieving the state of Yog) The sutra urges you to follow yamm- have control, neeyam- recommended activities for a healthy and spiritually enlightened existence,aasan-a steady physical posture where one can be comfortable, pranayam-controlled breathing pratyahaar-withdrawal of the senses, dhaarna-concentration dhyaan-meditation, samadho- samadhi Yam Niyam that is where it all begins these have to be observed that’s where, often people get awfully stuck They get stuck because unless you know what is Yam unless you know what is Niyam how will you follow them? It's difficult One whose life is devoid of truth lacks non-possesiveness lacks study of self bereft of effort to seek the Supreme without austerity As in, a person missing the above disciplines from his life this person is not eligible for Patanjal Yog Sutra. Whenever we begin the study of a scripture these 4 things need to be addressed first eligibility subject ground work relatedness/correlation What is the subject of the scripture? Since this is Patanjal Yog Sutra so the subject of the scripture is' Yog' Yog means connecting the individual consciousness with the Supreme consciousness the meeting of life force with the outward breath at the level of a physical entity at the mental level, collecting and focussing of the mind at the level of chitta, making it pure transforming the consciousness into divine consciousness That's the subject of this scripture Now, who is eligible to study this subject? Who deserves? Who is a volunteer? Eligible Fit for this, eligible You can't teach Shakespearean English to a 4 year old A 10 year old can't be trained to be a neurophysicist. An 8 year old can't be taught the theories of Newton. won't be able to teach him Archimedes principles won't be able to explain Edison's law of electricity because right now he is not ready his jouney has'nt commenced yet he is not ready for this So we will have to wait that he develops his basic language skills he understands verbs, nouns, adjectives, grammar first he learns to form sentences first the knowledge of science will follow So, Patanjal Yog Sutra is actually the science behind the Yog Now, who is eligible for this scientific class? He, who has the discretion to ask What is mind? What is intelligence? One who is swift, is detached One who is disciplined, is austere follows Niyam One who spends time in swadhayaya (introspecting or self study) One who has mastered the art of controlled breathing One who has mastered Yog asanas
