Rita Srivastav's question two spiritual paths sankhya and yoga but they appear to be opposite to each other can a person follow both the paths simultaneously Rita, this is a big misconception of yours that Yoga and Sankhya are opposite to each other I can say Yoga and Sankhya will be such that in one class child studies Geography, so in the second he studies Science, in third he studies Maths and the education that he has, preparing it with different subjects slowly he when he is passed out from the school it becomes necessary for him to have the knowledge of all these subjects and then their usage becomes vividly visible in his daily life similarly when we in the spiritual path, bhakti (devotion), gyana (knowledge), yoga, in yoga also there is Sankhya Yoga, Hatha Yoga there is Gyana Yoga Shabda (Sound) Yoga, Nada Yoga, different types we.. so for doing different practices, there is a sequence, ways and this is necessary because in human body, in human conscience, in human senses so many flaws are there that for removing those defects, all types of practices are necessary to be done like one man is as such that from tongue he can speak properly, he says sweet talks but in his very tongue there is greed for food he speaks very well, of discourses, of spirituality, of masters, of knowledge, very good talks so his action sense is very good, speech sense is very good, but the knowledge sense that he has, that knowledge sense is interested to eat different flavors, to eat different cuisine so whose tongue is busy in indulgence that person can not be a very good seeker I remember many years ago, I had stayed at Pujya Swami Akandananda ji' ashram this is the event of 1987 January '87, nearly from 14 January to 22 January I had stayed there so there a big dinning hall is there like it is here, and another small dinning was there inside for saints who used to work there so in that dinning there was a lady who used to serve in the evening, there in their kitchen only I was asked to eat so one evening it was very cold so she was frying 'pakore' and with great love eat more..inviting everyone, call him.. she was giving but it was visible in her eyes that how good she was feeling I said mother, why don't you eat? she said neither teeth remain in mouth nor that much energy in my intestine that they can digest she said now when others eat I make my mind happy by looking at them because I can't eat so there is a pain in her words, the agony she has while saying this is visible that the desire has not gone from mind but because as she can't digest, because by it body will ache, body will be diseased that is why she kills her mind and she said that when I want to eat, I make people eat this is also a good thing but despite making others eat her mind doesn't feel that satisfaction which would have come if she would have eaten, tasted if we see physically then she is staying at ashram, serving the dinning of hermitage and serving since very long years there is nothing lacking in her service she is there leaving her family means there is some dispassion in her mind, else whose mind is filled with infatuations and attachments he only say words to his master that I have great affection for you, I am very good seeker he might feel that i have many good things in me he only say words to his master that i have great affection for you, I am very good seeker he might feel that I have many good things in me but the reality is this that the family and home and amenities of home and the attachments with them never get disconnected that is why love for master has not become that big that he could see other relations as faded and go and sit in master's door this is not possible but there is a feeling in the mind that since we listen to discourses we have love for the master since we have been going to master's door since so many years that is why we have love for the master but if we start to compare but there is no comparison, it can not be compared where is the love full of reverence where is the worldly love of relation and selfishness, there is no comparison between them but still if you want to compare then the love for home over powers that is why sitting there now I am not saying this to make someone feel small the tradition that the scriptures have they say that the day you make your first son marry now I am not saying this to show someone small the tradition of scriptures says that the day you marry off your first son from that day your resolution for 'vanaprasthi' must start 'vanaprasthi' means now very soon I should be free from all the duties of home and world completely if possible should move towards renunciation and if don't move towards renunciation then van + prasth, prasthan means, what does moving towards forest means? where we back off from enjoyment, from relatives, how are you? how am I? what happened here, what happened there? the social conversation that is there, they extricate themselves from those conversation swadhyay (study of self), manan (contemplation), chintan, bhajan (chanting) service, health of body, will this life finish in just cooking & eating? so our old system used to be that the beginning of a life in that beginning should spend more time in the company with master, sages and then and when life approaches towards the end enjoyed the world a lot, taken care of children a lot, married children, now, what is now? now will you just sit there to make their life miserable? Remember, no son likes the if and buts of his father no daughter-in-law likes her mother-in-law sitting on her head that is why she may not tell in words but slowly from within they are wanting that and then they say also, go and do pilgrimage send them somewhere far, go to some relatives may be go to some pilgrimage at least , go to some gurudwara, now go... means get out unfortunately when you need to get your family members out, then think How dear you remain to them? like the government says that when you turn 58, so now retire sit at home. Now question arises at what age will you retire yourself from the responsibilities of your home? continuing to earn, previously earning for children after that earning for grand children already made two storey house, now have to built home for grand children also, now have to do this, have to do that I knew a woman, now she is not alive she used to fall sick so many times, family members used to think she would die but she used to recover and as soon as she would recover, she used to say to her great grandson... not grandson, great-grandson, I won't die without watching your wedding now see why she has held the thread of life? so that she can see the wedding of her great-grandson... not of grandson and see the coincidence when the wedding of this child was to happen... before one month great grandmother died someone said she was free. I said how free? she will be born in this great grandson's family now where will she go? where there is attachment there only she will be so I am giving one example that if tongue is habituated to eat more then that is the bondage. You have ten senses so from which senses which infatuations are trapped, you check it yourself and in mind previously there are so many impressions, so many desires, so many indulgence of sins and virtues, so many wishes that all materials that are present in your sub conscious and mind, I am not counting them now so different types of yoga are definitely necessary for us now few days ago I had been to Vrindavan to visit a sacred old saint he stays in Ramanreti so he was saying me, " Bhagwati don't convey knowledge to people, only teach them devotion." they don't have eligibility for the knowledge now. that much dispassion is not there that much wisdom is not there in the intelligence, that much desire is not there to acquire the great knowledge and if without dispassion they will listen to the knowledge, they will be proud that will be worse so he was saying to me repeatedly you teach them worship only, don't teach them Vedanta I kept listening, then getting the chance I requested, I said "Maharaj" I am understanding your words very well that is why I keep trying that whose eligibility is little apparent will engage them in that way towards knowledge, who is at the first step now, will engage them towards worship who have moved little ahead will engage them in yogasana if he does yogasana properly then will enter him to different parts of Yoga that is there I don't convey knowledge to everyone as soon as they come. and your worry is justified, this also I can understand but just request then while talking when I said whose disciple I am the moment I took the name of Maharaj Shri taking his name his eyes started to shine with happiness, you are his disciple? disciple of him? then after that he turned the talk completely because he used to understand the glory of my master, he knew that how much dispassion and how much renunciation and how much devotion and how much worship and when necessary and after thoroughly verifying the eligibility of the seeker only maharaj used to enter him into knowledge else do study/ recite, prayer, service only this much thing so doing service is also a yoga devotion is also one sankya yoga is also a path in Sankhya yoga you understand nature, understand what is creation how the body is made you understand that out of which element body formed, of which element mind is made of which element this world visible in front us is formed? the whole detail of this so to understand the visible world and the one who sees this visible world that observer is neither the body nor the mind, in reality the self is the observer so the self is the viewer and world is view to make understand this difference, nothing is better than Sankya yoga but, to understand this much sankya yoga he will have the eligibility whose mind is likely concentrated, some dispassion should be there at least there should be some serenity in mind, some purity should be in mind, whose mind is not pure with saam (stuffs), daam (prices), danda (penalties), bheda (differences) who always who remain in the false praise and respect such person can't get any knowledge from Sankhya Yoga, can't achieve anything also so they are made learn to let go so some where dispassion is necessary, some where science is necessary, some where control of senses is necessary so where what is necessary accordingly advice is given like in Sikh Panth you Shri Guru Granth Sahib's words are studied, listened and understood and should also be done but the sikh society doesn't know that Guru Nanak Sahib once upon a time had preached on Prana (life force) and yoga and a whole scripture is there which is called Sangla deep scripture Prana Sangalee Singla in Punjabi language , Singal in Hindi and at present Ceylon Which you call Sri Lanka Guru Nanak Sahib when had traveled to Sri Lanka and met its king, then king had asked what is prana (life force)? what is yoga? How many types of prana (life force) are there? How does prana function? How does prana function? How to inhibit prana? How to regulate prana? so all these preaching that he has given the collection of those preaches are there, the name of that scripture is Prana Sangalee. but the reading of Prana Sangalee is not done much in Sikh Society there is more chanting of Mool Mantra, recitation of Pancha Bani and more emphasis is given for a good life, a gurumukh, a heart filled with love and affection, a service body but it does not mean that Guru Nanak Dev didn't know anything about Yoga the truth is that Guru Nanak SahIb was a complete Yogi and he has shown the accomplishment his yoga at many places, wherever it was necessary like when Vali kandhari had stopped water, maharaj was present down, he was on the mountain, he had constructed a water reservoir, the whole village used to get water from there water should not reach to Guru Nanak Sahib and he should leave this place that is why he had stopped water from top he kept a very heavy rock on it so that water don't go down Mardana said, "Maharaj" How to live here without water, should we move? Maharaj said we won't move, let the water move. Meaning? so with Guru Nanak's determination that rock moved from there and water came down flowing he had kind of a control on that water that water came down, he was so angry that he with the help of his servants pushed a larger rock from the top... to kill Guru Nanak ji when this much heavy rock has fallen down so Mardana shouted, Maharaj look up, we are gone today Maharaj remained on his position, he only made his hands up like this and that heavy rock stopped reaching those hands till today in Pakistan gurudwara is there, Panja Sahib so it is said the mark that is there is of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji so wherever it was needed in his udasiyan, in his pilgrimage Guru nanak dev has used his siddhis and powers but he always used to say that the creator does the creations he never used to say that I have done "Sat Kartar, Sat Kartar, Sat Kartar" Guru Nanak always used to say this so the deeper knowledge that Guru Nanak had of Yoga path wherever he felt the eligibility of that person, he gave knowledge to him else to more people he gave much emphasis on devotional love and prayer sing the greatness of lord, pray, chant the name of lord with devotion and love remember god, each and every time his memory must stay Rakha ek hamara Swami, Sagal ghatan ka antaryami see him in every 'ghat', 'ghat' means in heart see the lord, every body is god's home, temple created by lord don't see anyone as human, in human form the creator has only come serve thinking him as lord remember, a person who runs the charity also feeds the hungry, on behalf of Guru Nanak Dev Ji also food is provided. Are both same? Think. Are both same? If someone says both are same, He hasn't understood Guru Nanak Dev Ji yet Guru Nanak didn't ask to feed any poor or hungry for Guru Nanak every human being is form of god Guru Nanak don't used to say to feed chappati to any poor or hungry for Guru Nanak every human being is form of god so to serve that form of god he used to give him food, water, clothes, place to sleep sweet words in his ears, eat food "Ji", whom do say 'Ji' who is lower to you or who is greater? so in the perception of Guru Nanak no one is a mere human? in his sight everyone is form of god form of lord so form of lord has come, so he should be served so when langar goes from the house of Guru nanak ji, so it is not to look down upon the hungry, poor and bare when langar from Guru Nanak's house was served, it had only one point of view that everyone is form of Govind lord himself has come by becoming man, woman, child, old so we serve lord and we give what he asks for and even if doesn't ask then we respect him through sweet words that is even today in langar there is this tradition that when anything is given to eat, drink so first 'Ji' is used with it that 'ji eat ji' , ' ji drink ji' 'Ji' is used first when a person running charity holds langar or by the side of the road many times many people hold langar, that by feeding others we will earn good deeds so whom they feeding, they fight with them also they also keep on insulting them they also push them many times they don't worshiping them understand this way that a saint comes to your home, your master comes so how will you serve your master? with which feelings will you do that? so when on Guru Nanak's house langar was given, so it was not for any poor it was not for any diseased it was for god in the flesh eh jag har ka roop hai, har roop nadari aaya this world is the form of god anyone who reside here, man, woman, child aquatic, avian whichever creature it is, that creature is none other than god so bhakti (devotion) yoga came or not so gyan (knowledge) yoga, bhakti (devotion) yoga, hath yoga, sankhya yoga, all these yoga in our body, knowledge senses, action senses, mind, intelligence, intellect, ego, creature to rectify all these.... all are necessary differently that is why there is no contradiction in them
