If I think that I am the body then I would be interested in sensory pleasures Because if I eat, I will be happy - if I drink, I will be happy If I have sex, I will be happy If I hear music through my ears, I will be happy But when I realize that I am not the body I am the Ever-Blissful Existence Then attraction for these small worldly pleasures won't exist It can't exist So, if you develop Vivek (discerning wisdom) correctly Then you won't have to do Vairagya (dispassion) but Vairagya will arise automatically About respected Swami Sivananda Saraswati ji They were telling me that on Guru Poornima, thousands of his devotees, sannyasis and Brahmancharis would pray Everyone prayed and offer him tilak and flower garlands And During the evening He sat in his cottage He took his own shoe and was hitting himself And he was asking, "Are you having fun in this or did you have fun during the prayers? When did you have fun?" He is posing the question himself and answering himself too Mahatmas play a unique game "I am a Swami Ji, I am everyone's Guru and they are worshipping me" If you are enjoying this internally This is also identification with the body From the point of view of Atman, there is no Guru and no disciple I am the Ever-Conscious Existence, I am Shiva One of his disciples said, "What are you doing Gurudev?" He said laughingly, "I am asking this what did it enjoy more?" "But Maharaj, why are you doing this?" He said, "It's good to maintain balance" You will be the slave of worldly stuff and objects If you are hoping to gain your joy, your happiness from these worldly objects Then you cannot certainly have this passion in your mind Because you are enslaved to that happiness Which you get from a wife or a husband or children or food or drink or clothes or car or this or that  Once you are focused on to this fact That all what you are seeing is transient, is mortal Isn't going to stay for long I am the one who is Atman - neither body nor mind nor the senses nor the subconscious I am the Pure Satchitananda (Ever-Truth, Ever-Conscious, Ever-Bliss) Then the slavery of the world is gone You won't have to do Vairagya but Vairagya will happen OK, if someone gives you rice pudding That, please have this rice pudding And while going he quietly says - there is poison in this Will you eat it? It's beautiful, there is edible silver on top of it Will you eat it? There are almonds and pistachios on top, will you eat it? How difficult would it be to discard that rice pudding? Tell me Not at all So, what is called Vairagya? The entire world is like that rice pudding with silver on top but you know it's poisonous That's it End of story! Now, you sit with eyes closed that I won't even look at the rice pudding because if I do, I would want to eat it So, we will call you stupid For social etiquette Like Sri Lakshman ji had said to his brother Ram When he showed him that look this is a head ornament and an earring of dear Sita He asked, "Look, does it belong to Sita or someone else?" Sita was kidnapped So, Ramchandra Ji shows him the jewelry that Hanuman Ji had found He gave them that jewelry but Lakshman Ji says That brother, I have always just seen her feet I have never raised my eyes and looked at her face So, how can I say if these belong to her or not If this was her anklet, I would definitely recognize it This is etiquette This is his respect This is not fear of his mind This is not a weakness of his mind So, if we forcefully restrain our senses And the mind still slips This is not called Vairagya Our senses don't even want to go towards sensory pleasures And the mind doesn't even want to think about it - this is called Vairagya See you cannot forcefully pull your mind away from the worldly sensual objects There are traditionally in the conservative way they will use  The method of keeping your senses away from those tantalizing sensual objects And the other way is that you enlighten your ability to discriminate in between Truth and untruth In between truth and untruth And then with even the open eyes Everything is in front of you but yet it won't lure you into that So there is no forceful suppression happening, there is understanding which is happening Being intelligent It will very...ahh...smoothly take you closer to seeing everything and in perspective You are able to make an assessment Can this thing give me eternal joy? If no then I shouldn't waste my time after that One person is suffering even after earning billions And if you are still feeling greedy looking at his billions and want to have that amount of money then you are an idiot And that billionaire is saying that I didn't get any happiness from this money But I have definitely bought things So, you should learn from his experience You can make yourself understand that I won't run after billions like crazy That's it Just remember this Just see the beautiful lives of Sri Krishna Duryodhana is a prince, a very powerful man And Vidur he has given a resignation from his post of minister So he is living in a very humble house There is an invitation from Duryodhana, the prince and from Vidur, a humble devotee Whose invitation, whom invitation does Sri Krishna accept? Not Duryodhana Rich powerful prince - no Sri Krishna goes to Vidur's house And after listening this if you wish to become a Duryodhana Well what to say then? And after listening this if you want to become like a Vidur You have taken a good understanding out of it Ahh....Kartavya? Hmm.. Kartavya's question is that I want to know whether Sanatana Dharma was the only dharma in past? If yes, then after that where did the thought of these other religions and Gods come from? And how did it happen? If you explain this to me, it will be great OK, so here I go with the great thing Sanatana means eternal The eternal principle never changes And we have understanding that the Vedic knowledge is not a manmade thing, it is also eternal Recognizing that eternal principle is called understanding the eternal dharma  What is Dharma? The intrinsic nature of anything is called the Dharma Let's say This is a flower and the nature of this flower is  what? It is colorful, it is soft to touch, it has a nice smell to it What is the intrinsic nature of water? It is flowing, it is colorless and it is sweet to drink That which never changes What is the nature of Earth? It is a heavy, it has gravity And it gives us support To all living beings and animate and inanimate That's the nature Similarly what is nature of the divinity? Sat, chit, ananda, vyapak Sat - Truth Chit - Ever Conscious Ananda - Ever Blissful Vyapak - Omniscient, present everywhere Now this is the eternal quality of God Our word is Parabrahman Para means greater Brahman means big So, word Parabrahman is not Parabrahman Word 'Parabrahman' is denoting about that existence which is Again I have to explain, Ever-Bliss, Ever- Truth Right? Ever-Conscious What is the Eternal truth of your body? Decay-able, it takes a birth, it grows, it gets sick, it dies Right? This is the eternal nature of your body and all the worldly stuff - right? So, when we go into depth  Of intrinsic nature of everything That which helps us to understand all is called Sanatana Dharma God is not a fictionalized character created by somebody's imagination Now then why different different religions? Because every region on this Earth Wherever the humans were They are going to think about who is running this world? How is it running? Ahh... From where did it come out from? Who created it? Because man woman gave birth to child Man wonders, woman wonders - who created us? Parents who created parents, their their their their parents, their parents... But when did it started this whole nonsense? Say any, any human who had been in any part of the world Today or tomorrow They were thinking about it Then as per their own understanding They thought - okay this is, this should be God Like in many tribal areas they thought the lightning is God When it thunders and lightning would happen - oh that's God For some nature became God Yeah So, these all different ideas about God came from that mind which was searching for the answers Now how would you know what you are believing is true or not? There comes the answer  The Eternal Vedic knowledge gives you the understanding About what the truth is That which gives us the knowledge and technique to understand that Eternal Truth is called Sanatana Dharma Now, in this Sanatana Dharma People with many different thoughts and ideologies exist Like Sankhya Darshan Like Yog And even in Sankhya Darshan, there are those who say there is no Ishwara Another segment says Ishwara exists There is Purva Mimamsa There is Vedanta All Acharyas of devotion have given their respective teachings Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh Avatars (incarnations) of Vishnu and Shiva The detailed descriptions of these are found in Puranas But what is the eternal truth about the form of Ishwara and Paramatman? To know this, we have Upanishads And we call Upanishads 'apaurushya' - they are not created by humans Like someone said Someone gave a very good thought, he gave an argument He said - we got the knowledge about Ishwara so we found out there is Ishwara And Ishwara alone made knowledge That's why Vedas are called 'Apaurushya' So, he says - if Ishwara made knowledge, was there a time when Ishwara was also ignorant? It's a thought OK, if we assume that Ishwara had knowledge Then why did someone who had knowledge think about giving birth to knowledge separately? Whose ignorance was he removing? Then he gave the thought - did knowledge come first or Ishwara? Knowledge happened through Ishwara Or did we know Ishwara exists after getting the knowledge that Ishwara exists? So, did knowledge happen through Ishwara? Like rays come from the sun Similarly, did knowledge come from Ishwara? So, what quantity of knowledge was gone and how much was left behind? That which gives us awareness and understanding on all these topics is called Sanatana Sanatana Dharma doesn't create any new Ishwara It just explains about that which exists
