The meaning is that, our speech and our thoughts, we should have control over both. Speech and our thoughts. Thoughts, what goes in the mind, that won't be known by anyone but the speech that will come out of your mouth, everyone will hear that. And your speech will be as such how your thoughts will be. So should have an eye on both. and it is only possible to keep an eye on your thoughts and on your language when you are being very calm and in mental quietude to observe what kind of thinking and then what kind of speech comes out of your mouth. So to make your mind sit in quietude is very much necessary. So may be in the morning or in the evening at least two times for some time sit being completely empty. If possible then at that time even mantra chanting should not be there. Mind should become completely empty, sit with such determination. It won't be easy that is why it becomes necessary to say that for sometime do mantra initially. Mantra will make the mind introvert and after some time leaving mantra should keep an eye on the mind only, that on our mind what is going on? At that time if some bad thoughts come then don't think that oh I am very bad and if good thoughts come then also don't think that oh I am very good. Whatever thoughts come to mind only see them becoming an observer. Very If very dirty water is there then how to clean it? The easy way is don't do anything, leave the water. After sometime it will automatically, the dirt will settle down and the water will become clean at top. And this happened in Buddha's life. Once Buddha and his disciple Ananda were walking and going somewhere through the forest. In mid way Buddha said, 'Ananda, I am thirsty.' To Buddha, Anands said, 'Lord you sit, I am arranging water for you He said, 'what to arrange, before sometime the stream that we crossed, barsati nala (a steam that has water only during rainy season) you bring water from there' Ananda said that was too dirty. That much dirty water, that is not worth drinking for you. Buddha said, No 'Ananda bring from there' So little disappointed Ananda went in that direction. After going there he sees that some moments before... just one hour... through the stream which they had crossed and water was very dirty, now that water is not at all dirty. Now that water was clean. So he made Dona (cup made of leaves) pour clean water into it and bringing it gave it to Buddha. After Buddha drank, he asked the question that 'Bhante (revered master), how did you know that water would be clean now? Buddha said, 'see water from that stream of water perhaps some chariot or some horses or some buffaloes might have passed who had stirred all the soil at the foothills that's why all the water had become dirty. Now after a while when we returned back then what did you see there? That now the water is clean because during that time no one else had passed by it because no one had come back and forth of us. And only we had crossed that stream. So I had an estimate that till now the soil might have settled down and water in the upper level would be clear now. So from here a formula of meditation came out that when your mind becomes very dirty, when your mind becomes very messy then for sometime leave the mind. Don't try to rectify the mind. Sit being at peace. Slowly all the bad thoughts and all the bad intentions that will settle deep down on their own and your mind will likely be at peace and will become pure. If you can't do it directly then its formula is that, there only start inhaling deeply, inhaling long and deep breath and exhaling then after some time you will see how much disturbed your mind will be, it will automatically become stable and mind will be at peace. The thoughts will gradually decrease and will become very less. Then the disturbance due to the mind that won't happen. Like if your hands become dirty, then what do you do? You go to bathroom then you wash hands with soap and then when you come out of the bathroom, you had gone with dirty hands and when you came out, hands are cleaned. Similarly when your mind becomes little dirty, then go to meditation room. and with the soap of attentiveness wash your mind. and when you will come out of this room of meditation, then your mind which was impure or was in anger or in greed or was in any other negativity, with that it would have been cleaned. Would have been cleared. So make sure that everyday at least twice you sit down for sometime. Minimum I would say would be forty minutes minimum forty minutes you sit erect you close your eyes, you breathe deep and you watch your body, your breath and all the thoughts whatsoever coming without being judgmental and just be an observer and see the drama of the mind and see the drama of the breath going in and out and in and out and body remains stable all the times. The more you do this the more your life will have a better quality. Nicer quality, cool quality So in a day, once you sit as such where body remains stable, breath remains deep and then being the observer of the body and breath, see the thoughts coming into the mind and if you find difficult in doing like this, no problem then at that time you take little mantra chanting along but do it with breath. When breath goes in then mantra and when breath goes out then also mantra. So when you will sit doing the mantra then sitting won't remain difficult. It will become easy.
