Ques: Does the deep sleep really happen or not? The reason for this is - When after waking up in the morning we say, 'I had a dream.' How are we able to say this? Because when the dream was happening, this dream was being recorded in my memory. Master's comment (That is why on waking up you are able to say,'I had a dream.') Ques contin'd...Anyways! Case 2. When we are wake up in the morning then we also sometimes say that I was not dreaming, I was sleeping soundly deep sleep... in deep sleep. How we are able to say this? Because we are not recalling any dreams so we say that I was in the deep sleep but it can also be false. Ans: So now you are refuting the dreams too? And you are also refuting the deep sleep. So understand this carefully. The pattern of our sleep is such that when you go & lie down in your bed, for the first 5-10-15 minutes, for some half an hour, for some 1 hour & for some 2 hours thoughts are running in your mind. Body is not at rest, mind is not at rest. That is why, you keep lying in the bed. In the beginning of the sleep cycle you get a very light sleep in which you are little aware of your body. After this you slightly dip into sleep, then you become conscious & after that you plunge again. After this stage of normal sleep, you go into a dream state. After this dream state you go into deep sleep. After deep sleep, again there will be light sleep. After light sleep, again there will be dream state. After dream state again follows deep sleep. Such 4,5 or 6 cycles happen for everybody. If you wake up during light sleep, one indication for that is, you will not feel very refreshed. You will feel tiredness in your body. If you wake up during your dream state then also it takes some time to fully transition into waking state from dream state. Like...we can say that some intoxication (of dream state) lingers afterwards. 3rd stage is the deep sleep. If you wake up from the deep sleep then you will feel that the whole night you have just been sleeping, you had no dreams. Many people say that we don't get any dreams but it is not like that. One who has thoughts in the day time, will also get dreams during the night. One who is thoughtless during the daytime, possibly he will get no dreams at night. Some people believe that yogis don't get dreams. But this is little debatable. If a gyani has waking state, if a yogi has a deep sleep, then why not dream state? What is the problem in that? We should not have any concern over it. So which stage of sleep cycle do you wake up from, depending on that your memory is formed. But when you see a dream, at that instance, you don't say, 'All that I am seeing right now is being recorded into my memory.' When I wake up, I will pull out from my memory what I was dreaming about. Fact is that during dream state, all of it seems to be very real. You see it exactly like you see in your current waking state. So that world is no different than this one. You see it the same way as waking state. When someone's dream is broken and he wakes up, only then he says, 'Oh I was somewhere else.' Now some people believe that during the dream state - jeeva goes out of the physical body. For example, if he had a dream of Bombay, jeeva is gone to Bombay. And if he dreamt of America then he is gone to America. They call this 'Astral traveling.' That the mind goes out of the body. They claim that because of this (Astral travel), when you wake up in the morning, you get a small jerk in the body because it (jeeva) enters the body again. Fact is that your mind creates your dreams. Mind does not go anywhere out of body. It does not go out. That is why... Ok assume that you met your maternal uncle in your dream. And assume that your uncle lives in Bombay and you live in Ludhiana. So you met your uncle, you had a conversation, you went to the beach-side, you drank coconut water, you ate snacks & enjoyed the cool breeze. And in the morning you woke up in your body again. Now go ahead, call & ask your uncle, 'Uncle that coconut water was ok but you took the one with cream & gave me the one without cream. Why did you do that?' And say if you truly call him & ask then uncle will say, 'Son Agra is very nearby, go there.' Mental asylum of Agra is famous. 'Go there & get your mind checked.' So in dream state, you do not go anywhere leaving your physical body behind. Internally the mind...yogis say that there is a nadi (energy channel) in the throat called 'Hita nadi' which is responsible for causing dreams. Such a huge country, such a long time period, such an expanse of Earth & Ether - whatever you see, you see all of this internally. So dream state, deep sleep & then light sleep. Again, dream state..so this cycle continues. There are some people whose deep sleep period gets reduced & dream period gets longer. Such people wake up very restless in the morning. Right? People who had light sleep overnight and were not even able to dream, such people also wake up feeling heavy. Heaviness in the body. But the one whose sleep, dream & deep sleep cycle works properly, and in one cycle of sleep, the period of deep sleep is atleast 16-20 minutes. Then we can say that this person's sleep is absolutely healthy sleep. Quality of sleep will be good only in deep sleep. So dreams certainly come. Do not doubt this at all and its not that just with the help of your memory or imagination, you make up some story & you think that you should just narrate that. In reality, it is not like that. And there is no proof for this. You have written that dreams happened, there is no proof of this. Gentleman! the proof of your dream can only be you - not anyone else. Husband & wife are sleeping. What the husband saw as a dream - will the wife know? And husband, whatever dream he saw, wife does not know. What wife saw as a dream, husband does not know. They... They sometimes... Some people have very physical dreams. Someone I know, that girl got married and after marriage they went for honeymoon & came back. His husband was very upset with his mother-in-law & father-in-law. They asked, 'Son-in-law why are you so upset?' He replied, 'Why didn't you tell me that she kicks her legs during the sleep. She has thrown me down from bed at-least 4 times. She just kicks so hard. Is your daughter a jenny (female donkey)?' Parents said, 'Son how would we know? She used to sleep in her own room. We did not know this.' He said, 'She kicks her legs so much.' And that girl innocently said, 'I don't even remember. Why would I kick you?' But during the period of sleep, what happens to her body, that girl is not aware. Anyways, the husband was finally reassured. Parents said, 'You will become used to it after some time. Don't worry! Then you won't complain. Right now it is very new for you. After some time you will get used to it. Don't worry!' So both of them were reassured & sent back. During sleep you are unconscious of your body. And your dreams too... Let me say something about this...how will your dreams be? Whatever your thoughts & emotions are during the daytime, your dreams too would be like that. If in the daytime you gossip, steal, then in the dream too you will do the same. If you study in the daytime, preparing for exams then what will be your dream? You are sitting in the examination hall and your pen is not working. You are sitting in the examination hall and you are not getting the answering sheet. Right? Ok, when you passed out of the college & you got married, now you are engrossed with kids all day. Now what will be your dreams? Kid's milk in the bottle is finished. I have to feed him. I have to do this or I have to do that... So how will be our dreams? Just like our day. You should try & complete this with resolution and that is for next 7-8 days, you should do 'Om Namah Shivaya' mantra japa in the morning as well as in the evening - Om Namah Shivaya! Or you can do Mool Mantra. 'Ik onkar satnam karta purakh nirbhau nirvair akal murat ajooni shebhang gur prasad....' With this mantra- you should sit one hour in the morning & one hour in the evening. Your choice, take any mantra. Om Namah Shivaya or Mool Mantra - take up any. But for one hour in the morning, one in the evening ....one in the morning, one in the evening. Do this for 30 days. Within this period, after some time, even if the dream comes - it will be that you are sitting for japa. Maintain one diary. All of you who are listening to me, I am saying this to all of you. Keep one diary and write on it that I did a sitting from 6 am to 7 am. Or from 6:15 am to 7 am or did a sitting in the evening 6 pm to 7 pm or 8 pm to 9 pm or 9 pm to 10 pm. So maintain a diary where you write down your morning & evening japa. How long did you sit for? 40 minutes, 45 minutes or 1 hour. Write that down. Maintaining a diary like this, do a japa for 30 days. Within this period you will have many such dreams that I did not do the japa or my japa did not finish. It is all about the conditioning of the mind. If your mind is sattvaguni - your dreams will be of sattvaguna. If it is rajoguni then dreams too will be... of rajogun. And the one who fights, quarrels & curses for the whole day, will dream only of this in his sleep. Dreams of fights & quarrels. So our mind whatever it is like during the day, it is same during the night time. Your effort should be such that before sleeping at night, you should certainly sit down for meditation. 'Lord! This day has passed & now the night has begun. May I sleep well and when I wake up tomorrow morning, may I wake up with your remembrance.' Go for sleep thinking that I have to wake up at 5am in the morning. After taking bath, I must do my spiritual practice - with such a firm resolution, go to sleep every night. And if you do this consistently then the quality of your mind, thoughts in your mind, this flow of thoughts will also be of this. During the day, if you are fooling around for worldly pursuits then at night you will not suddenly turn into a sadhu - at night you will become even bigger fool. So if you regulate your day time, your sleep will automatically improve. I have said this earlier before going to sleep at night, you should have some rules. For example, you will have your dinner before 6pm. Just before going to your bed, up till your knees, wash your feet. Wash your hands up till your elbows. Wash your face and touch your ears with your wet hands. Ears should also be...kind of refreshed and like it is summertime right now, so massage a coconut oil on the under surface of your feet. If your sleep is not good then one drop each of coconut oil, a good quality coconut oil drops, put them in your nose. 2-3 drops each in left & right (nostril) and then while sitting on your bed, first thing you do is remember God. Whichever mantra you like, do mantra japa for some time. Doing japa after thanking God that 'This day has passed. Lord, may I sleep well in your shelter, in your grace, & your glance, may I receive it forever.' And happily go to sleep like this. You will have a very good sleep.
