वेदान्त सार श्लोक 213 - 214 l AV Epi 1889 l Daily Satsang l 23rd April 2023 l Anandmurti Gurumaa

If lust is forsaken, anger can't be given up If anger is forsaken, greed can't be given up If greed is forsaken, ego can't be given up one runs after name, fame and acclaim Avadhoo! It is so difficult to cast-off this maya Recluse mind renounces maya With the anchor of Eternal word Recluse mind renounces maya With the anchor of Eternal Word Thus says Kabir, listen O sadho! This knowledge is known by the rarest of rare It is so difficult to cast-off this maya Avadhoo! It is so difficult to cast-off this maya Avadhoo! It is so difficult to cast-off this maya One leaves the home and sets off with bare essentials And then discards these bare essentials one day too And wanders from one place to another - Maya doesn't let one stay in one place If sensual desires are given up, anger doesn't go Sensual desires are given up, meaning you didn't get married, didn't get a spouse You worked very hard and all the energy that was invested in sensual desires was suppressed but it went into anger That's why, there is a saying in the world - one who doesn't get married and starts getting very angry People say, "Get him married, he will be fine" It's not a matter of joke! The anger we see in many sadhus (celibates), sometimes that is because of suppressed carnal desires and it comes out as anger Carnal desire is a force Look, that's why our Rishis talked about the institution of marriage, so that - Following the Vedic way, the correct way - you can spend your life in one place with one partner Else the mind is a sinner, it will go to ten different places If one gives up sensual desires, anger doesn't go OK, then one gives up anger Then greed doesn't go If one gives up greed Then ego doesn't go Have you seen this? This comes in newspapers - 'So and so businessman renounced his wealth worth billions' And 50 million was spent on the ceremony All TV channels, newspapers and journals were invited And 5 million was spent on the procession that took place Are they renouncing or strengthening the hold? One fasts on Paryushan Parv (A holy event observed by Jain community through fasting, prayers and meditation) So, the one who fasts more is given respect Someone who donates more money to the temple is felicitated with a turban It can be a Hindu temple, Jain temple or a Gurudwara Anyone who gives more money It means he is leaving greed, he is giving So, one who gives - what does he get? He gets respect Respect increases fame - he gets respect and fame He left sensual desires, anger and greed Then ego doesn't go and when ego doesn't go - then desire for respect and fame doesn't go Mann bairagi maya tyagi O Mind! Be dispassionate and leave this maya Shabd mein surat samayi Associate your mind with one eternal word Shabd-anugata samadhi In savikalpa samadhi, one type is shabd-anugata samadhi When the mind is associated with any one word Mind became focussed The mind took form of the mantra The mind became still in that This is called 'shabd mein surat samayi' (anchor of one eternal word) Thus says Kabir, listen O sadho Yeh gam birale paayi Here 'gam' doesn't means unhappiness, but it means 'to know' Who will know this secret? The one who has dispassion One who has dispassion Meaning no sensual desires, anger, greed, ego, no desire for respect and fame Now, look these are all potholes of the mind "I don't need anything, I don't need anything - but I definitely need respect" They say, "Whether I get respect or not but if I go somewhere, I should definitely get money" So, someone is stuck here, someone is stuck there Some monk is stuck in his ego associated with renunciation And some businessman is stuck in his ego associated with wealth Both are stuck One is stuck naked and another is stuck while wearing good clothes That's the only difference One is stuck while sitting in his Rolls-Royce car And one is stuck while walking bare feet on the road 'Avadhoo! Maya taji na jayi' It is very difficult to cast-off maya The mind keeps getting stronger - in sensual desires, in anger, in greed What happens is that your mind becomes powerful Like Someone used harsh words You got angry and in response to that one word, you said four The other person responded to your four words with eight You responded with sixteen for eight So, it's just escalating This is samsara OK, someone said something wrong You just listened to it You heard and just left it Two, four, six, eight, sixteen, thirty-two - nothing will happen now! By not getting angry, mind's vritti get contained By getting angry, mind's vritti get further scattered Containing mind's vritti is vairagya (dispassion) and spreading mind's vritti is samsara (world) This is a big trouble The truth is the mind traps so subtly in this that one doesn't even realise when they got trapped And yet they get trapped Let me reiterate One who talks too much, sleeps too much, eats too much -cannot be a Yogi And the one who is not a Yogi, he/she cannot be eligible for Gyana- the highest wisdom This is a prerequisite mentioned in the eligibility of gyana OK, imagine you didn't do it earlier and you directly met a gyani Guru You started listening to Vedanta directly What should you do then? Now, I won't tell that person to leave and first do this Rather I would say, "No problem, listen to gyana and simultaneously we will make you do this as well" Where there is no practice of Yoga and only Vedanta is taught I have seen in those places as well that big trouble arise Everyone there just get into the studious mode "We have finished studying Kathopanishad, Ishavasya, Brihadratha, Panchadasi" "We are through the Vivek Chudamani as well" "We have done everything" "OK Swami ji, what is happening in the ashram now?" "Vedanta Sara is being taught in ashram now" "Oh, I read that several years ago" "Then I should just go to my factory" But he doesn't say that "I am going to the factory everyday since so many years- I should now leave that as well" Recently in London when we had the programme so while driving in the car, a phone call came So, the person who was driving me was also taking the calls since they were about the program So, I said, "You can take the call, no problem" And she was talking the calls on the car speaker so I was also listening to them But the caller didn't know that I am sitting next to the person they have called and they are on speaker So, he asked, "Where is the satsang happening (in British accent)?" She told the dates The caller asked, "Is it a typical satsang?" I was like, "What is that? Typical satsang - what do you mean by that?" Now, what do you think that I should show you some tricks or a dance on stage then you won't think it's a typical satsang? What should I do? So, we kept laughing - what was that? They told me that they get such strange phone calls and people ask weird questions But now it's our job to give them the information and we keep doing that "But is it a typical satsang?" So, what were you expecting? People have strange intellects So, those who listen to and read Vedanta don't leave samsara They just become shabd-gyani (collect bookish knowledge) and they feel very satisfied that - "I know everything, there is no need to do anything else" "What else will they tell? That I am Sat-chit-ananda Brahman, Samsara is an illusion" "I already know that" "Let's go watch a movie" "Where should we go for shopping? Where is the sale?" "Who is getting married? Whose party is it? Where should we go?" "Let's do something" So, Vedanta is a success when the discipline of Yoga comes along with it Because, the tool after manan is - Nidhidhyasana After nidhidhyasana, comes samadhi That is of two types - savikalpa and nirvikalpa And what is the direct tool to experience Brahman? The direct tool is samadhi Then the question arises - which samadhi? Which one? Shabd-anugat, vichar-anugat, samadhi of ananda, samadhi of Yoga, jada-samadhi - which samadhi? What are you calling samadhi? One needs to have the understanding There is a complete step-by-step sequence related to it What is the sequence? Yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi Who must do this? Guru ji? What should the disciple do? The disciple should just sleep! What should the disciple do? So, this needs to be done by the disciple Then with the desire of moksha (liberation) and gyana, the disciple must go close to Sadguru And then sitting close to Sadguru's feet, listening to Vedanta and scriptural gyana And after shravan (listening), comes manan (contemplation) and after manan, comes nidhidhyasana And maturity of nidhidhyasana happens in nirvikalpa samadhi Listening happened through shabd in shravan But for direct first-hand encounter, nidhidhyasana is essential That's why some people only refer to nidhidhyasana as the direct tool Everything else is just details of nidhidhyasana There is samadhi - savikalpa and nirvikalpa - this is just detailing of the Nidhidhyasana anena vidhna catustayena virahitam cittam nirvatadipavadacalam sadakhandacaitanya matramavatisthate yada tada nirvikalpakah samadhirityucyate When these four obstacles are removed and the mind is liberated, then your mind will become so still, like - A flame is burning in a room with no wind It is absolutely still
