वेदान्त सार श्लोक 214 - 215 Part1 AV Epi 1890 lDaily Satsang l 24th April 2023 l Anandmurti Gurumaa

And what is the direct tool to experience Brahman? The direct tool is samadhi Then the question arises - which samadhi? Which one? Shabd-anugat, vichar-anugat, samadhi of ananda, samadhi of Yoga, jada-samadhi - which samadhi? What are you calling samadhi? One needs to have that understanding There is a complete step-by-step process related to it What is the process? Yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi Who must do this? Guru ji? What should the disciple do? The disciple should just sleep! What should the disciple do? So, this needs to be done by the disciple Then with the desire of moksha (liberation) and gyana, the disciple must go close to Sadguru And then sitting close to Sadguru's feet, listening to Vedanta and scriptural gyana And after shravan (listening), comes manan (contemplation) and after manan, comes nidhidhyasana And maturity of nidhidhyasana happens in nirvikalpa samadhi Listening happened through shabd in shravan But for direct first-hand experience, nidhidhyasana is essential That's why some people only refer to nidhidhyasana as the direct tool Everything else is just details of nidhidhyasana There is samadhi - savikalpa and nirvikalpa - this is just detailing of nidhidhyasana anena vidhna catustayena virahitam cittam nirvatadipavadacalam sadakhandacaitanya matramavatisthate yada tada nirvikalpakah samadhirityucyate When these four obstacles are removed and the mind is liberated, then your mind will become so unwavering, like - A still flame is burning in a room with no wind It is absolutely still Flame of the lamp is sometimes completely still - this is a blissful experience That the lamp is aflame but unmoving, it is completely still And the truth is that it is not difficult to still the mind Just start watching that lamp and the mind will become still Wah! If one loves the Guru, has reverence towards the Guru - then just merely looking at Guru's face, the mind becomes still You saw the Guru and the mind became still But the mind that gets still in this way, wavers again after sometime Nirvikalpa samadhi is that in which the next condition is this - The only One truth, the indivisible swaroopa that exists - when the mind gets completely focussed and still in it This is called nirvikalpa samadhi There is no vikalpa (thought) of samsara or vikalpa of 'I' or 'you' The mind attains shoonya (nothingness) from 'I' and 'you' This is not the shoonya samadhi of Buddhists - the verse is not talking about shoonyata 'I', the ego, that which emerges when it associates with Chetna, that 'I' doesn't exist anymore One that is left behind, it is not possible to describe it in words 'tada nirvikalpakah samadhirityucyate' - this is called nirvikalpa samadhi Look, in the nirvikalpa samadhi of Yoga - only shoonyata of vikalpa (thoughtlessness) is there 'I am' - there is an absence of this 'I-ness' And then they say that the mind became one with Ishwara - this is their (Yoga's) nirvikalpa samadhi But what is the samadhi of Vedanta? Where the mind became absolutely still just like the flame of a lamp in an airtight room And what is the mind? It became one with the only one Brahman, the absolute existence This is nirvikalpa samadhi Wah, wah, wah! Now, acharya says that if you want to attain samadhi - then related to that topic, this statement is given in the Gaudapada Karika (Vedanta scripture) yaduktam laye sambodhayeccitam viksiptam samayetpunah When the mind wavers, when it becomes disturbed - When it gets attracted, it gets excited, it gets scattered Then catch hold of it and make it calm Not that if it got scattered then let it be scattered! It's the nature of the mind, it will get scattered but just make it calm again sakasayam vijaniyatsamapraptam na calayet Always keep an eye on vikshepa of the mind And be aware of the vikshepa arising in the mind It shouldn't be so that the mind is in vikshepa are you are not conscious of it, that you are unaware Don't let it go into so much vikshepa Give the mind permission to go into vikshepa but it should be under your vigilance Like when a young child is being naughty, the mother says - "just play here in the ground so I can keep an eye on you" "Don't go here and there, just play here" So, you should always have an eye on the mind If it's in vikshepa - no problem, we will make it calm Like a mother rounds up the child - "OK son, that's enough" And if he doesn't listen, she just gives him a slap - "That's enough, sit silently now - no more playing and running around" "Sit down now and do your homework" The verse says - be aware of the vikshepa of mind, just hold the mind by it's ear and make it sit down Mann mereya antar dere nidhan hai, bahar vast na bhaal This describes pulling of mind's ears! Jo paave so punch tu gurumukh nadhar nihal What you want is ananda (bliss) that you will not find outside from your wife, husband, kids, home or money You can only find it inside - so eliminate the vikshepa samapraptam na calayet nasvadayedrasam tatra nihsangah prajnaya bhavet nihsangah prajnaya bhavet When the mind is focussed, then don't allow the mind to get entangled in the bliss of samadhi Use viveka (wisdom) to bring the mind out of it These methods are given in Gaudapada Karika to get rid of the obstacles related to samadhi Wah, wah, wah! This is a very subtle topic so contemplate on this again Each word is such that you must pay a lot of attention to it and listen again, contemplate again Focus your intellect on this topic again Simultaneously, what I have said about yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, dharana, and dhyana - focus your mind completely on these The entire journey is about making this mind understand This mind that is scattered, that is distracted and wanders outside - it is all about rounding it up carefully and bringing it back It forgets It becomes delusional It becomes disturbed - when? Because of it's own ignorance So be very careful and make the mind focussed You must be like that Especially when you are dealing with others And especially what all thoughts arise in your mind, what emotions - Like, hmm - if you started sitting for mantra chanting for a few days, then - Then the mind says, the mind plays tricks - it says - "OK, it's just about doing mantra chanting - fine do it" and then the mind in parallel engages in other thoughts of business, world, etc. etc. Chanting is going on and thoughts are happening at the same time Both engines are running in parallel And the mind is so clever, it congratulates itself - "Do you know how much chanting I have done today?" "I was sitting for so long" - and then it will tell a few people "Today, I got really engrossed in doing chanting - I didn't even realize where all this time went" But how would you know when you were asleep - how would you know? This is a story of Swamis There was a Swami ji who gave very good discourse and all his fellow disciples would sit down and listen Other people would also listen to him There was a fellow-disciple who was also a renunciate and had a big belly And he would sit in front And while listening to Vedanta, his eyes would close and mind would become relaxed And as the mind got relaxed, he would sleep And he would snore while sleeping And his belly would move with the snoring And he snored so loudly that people sitting close to him would get scared So, after the discourse the speaker said to him, "What's wrong Swami ji? Didn't you sleep well at night?" He said, "No, I slept really well" So he said, "But you slept in the gathering" "Who says I slept in the gathering?" He was in UP so said in a the local slang - "Which idiot says that I slept?" He said, "I am the one saying it, no one else" "Not at all Swami ji, what are you saying?" "You were giving such a good discourse on Vedanta" "You were talking about adhyaropa and apavada - during that it is not at all possible that I slept" He said, "But I heard you snoring" "That was not snoring, I was chanting OM in every breath" "I chant OM in eery breath - that was the sound of OM, you didn't understand" "You were speaking that's why you weren't able to hear the sound properly" What can be done about such people? Nothing can be done about such people! If it's a normal worldly person, Swami ji can scold them But if one Swami ji does this in front of another Swami jin - then who should scold who? It's a big problem! And every mind is clever - it says, "I haven't done anything wrong at all" "Everyone else makes mistakes but not me - I can never be wrong" Problem is this that the other person has the same 'I', he is not wrong either There is no 'you' - it's 'I' here and 'I' there - everywhere it's just 'I', 'I', 'I' And 'I' am never wrong - how can 'I' be wrong? So, it's always 'you' that is wrong - do you understand? Not 'I' Two persons were fighting with each other So, their Swami came Swami ji saw that the two fellow-disciples were fighting - what had happened? They were fighting and Swami ji came in between and said, "Look, it's all my mistake" They said, "What? Why are you coming in between?" He said, "No, no, no - this is what I am trying to say - it's all my mistake" "Leave it, it's all my mistake" They said, "But it's not your mistake at all" Now they stopped fighting with each other and they were both trying to convince Swami ji - "No, no it's not your mistake - you were not a part of this conversation - you are not a part of this whole thing" "Why are you saying it is all your fault?" He said, "Because it's not your fault" He said, "That's what I am saying" "It's not my fault" Swami ji said, "That's what I am saying that it's not your fault" He said, "That's what I am saying that it's not my fault" Swami ji said, "This is why I am saying that it's not a fault of either of you - it's all my mistake" Both of them said again, "But you were not a part of this" But the fight ended Only an intelligent person will say this Everyone else will say - "I am right, you are wrong; I am right, you are wrong....." Right? Wah wah! Webs of the mind are very dangerous You won't be able to understand these dangerous webs merely by listening to words To cut these webs, extreme awareness is needed Extreme vigilance Extreme humility Deep analysis of the mind The best thing is - If you don't remember all of this, just remember this much - Don't talk too much Don't eat too much Don't sleep too much Follow these three rules Self-control over speech, self-control over tongue and - Don't go into too much sleep If we remain aware - see take as much sleep as needed by the body Don't just keep sleeping whenever you feel like I have seen people when they don't have anything to do - especially women who stay at home If they have nothing to do, they just sleep You ate food and then slept They just keep sleeping whenever they want You won't find sona (gold) by sona (sleeping) So, don't sleep but be awake You must become conscious So, yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi If you work on these, then Self-realization won't take a long time Many people are looking perplexed - "We came here to listen to Vedanta, where is this Yoga coming from in between?" Like you can cook any vegetable, but you will have to add salt Right? OK, you might or might not add turmeric, chillies, mango powder or lemon But you will have to add salt So, Yoga is definitely needed Now this is a unique thing about Vedanta Sara Surprise!!! One works on Self-realization, walks the path of Self-realization and on the way came Yoga! Yoga is what? Union Of what? The Self to Self The Real Self is understood by the mind So, journey of Self is done So, union of - you can say that "The union of 'I' and Paramatman is Yoga' - OK, you can say this No problem, it's a synonym It's a synonym Wah wah wah! That's all for today
